Onyx Boox Nova Air C 7.8 Color eInk Android reader Cover, Pen and Root Access

This is a fascinating device, that I really enjoyed investigating -- it doesn't fit any regular use-case for me, but it was totally worth trying out. It's a very capable Android 11 device, and can do most things you'd do on other tablets -- with caveats around eInk refresh rates.

Installing Google Play is easy and gives you access to a huge catalog of apps, and other book stores. Kindle works great on it, but so do ePub books from my public library.

The color eInk is a marvelous accomplishment, but isn't suitable for video or much in the way of gaming. However its wonderful for reading, and web browsing. It turns out, all Onyx devices regularly call an API in China, although seem to send very little data mostly normal stuff about crashes or bugs so they can fix it. To block this, I needed root access -- no simple trick, but there's decent info online. Everything will work as designed.

Rooted - I'll remove my stuff, but leave root access and the firewall running, blocking the system services that send data. This disables some functionality I didn't use -- you can always re-configure the firewall to re-enable those functions as you see fit.

Condition Cosmetically everything is pretty much perfect. Under direct light and at a very precise angle, I can see a small hair-size line near one corner of the screen that may have been a factory defect -- it was never out of my office, so hasn't been dropped or scuffed. The previous owner claims to have only used it for an hour, and a close inspection when I received it showed no other issues then either. The boxes have some wear near where they open, but are solid and their contents are complete. The serial number in software matches the serial number on the box.

The pen works great and supports multiple levels of pressure, drawing latency is remarkably low. The cover is flawless, although I wish they'd given it a stronger magnetic to hold onto the device.
